Sinds de opmars van internet en cd-rom kent iedereen de voordelen maar ook de onvolkomenheden van zoekmachines. De ontsluiting van het wereldwijde digitale archief laat nog veel te wensen over. Is het al lastig teksten toegankelijk te maken voor gebruikers, veel complexer is de automatische beschrijving en ontsluiting van audiovisueel materiaal. The opportunities and limitations ofautomatic indexingSince the advance of the Internet and CD-ROM, everyone knows the advantages and imperfections of search engines. Accessing the worldwide digital archive still leaves a lot to be desired. Where there are currently problems making texts available to users, the automatic description and accessibility of audio-visual material is far more complex. Annemieke de Jong of the Computerisation and Digitalisation project team of the Netherlands Audio-Visual Archive answers the question of whether software can replace the documentalist.
